Lighter Hybrid / Cross Bike from KTM
This KTM Macina Sprint is a variant of one our favourite and best selling bikes. It comes with the very latest Bosch PerformanceLine CX Gen 4 motor and a 500Wh battery.
The key feature of this bike is the lightweight solid front fork. This reduces the overall weight but also makes the bike feel more nimble and agile. Ideal for a combination of road, woodland tracks, towpaths, smoother tracks etc. The KTM Macina Sprint is LFC ready – so lights, fenders and carrier can be added as required. The wiring for the lights is already within the frame, making it possible for the addition of lights that run from the main battery and are simply turned on and off from the handlebars.
There are two frame shapes – the one in the main picture with a standard cross bar and the other with a lower cross bar as shown in the other picture in the gallery.
The E-Bike System
The bike has the latest Bosch PerformanceLine CX Gen4 motor. This is Bosch’s most powerful and market leading motor capable of up to 340% assistance (85 Newton Metres). The Bosch system has 4 levels of assistance – from Eco (50% assistance) up to Turbo (340%). The system includes the dynamic E-MTB mode. This responds to the rider’s needs and will switch seamlessly between Tour and Turbo mode as needed depending on the cadence rate of the rider. The Bosch motor has the advantage over other motors in its class:
- Proven reliability – demonstrated by the huge numbers of brands that have adopted it.
- A smooth assistance. You will not lurch off, but if power is what you want then there is plenty
- Consistency – some of the other motors may get to the same power output but they have problems maintaining this.
- Now has full size chainring & no resistance if pedalling without assistance.
The battery is the Bosch frame mounted – 500 watt hour.. This will give you a range of up to about 90 miles in Eco mode and even in Turbo will go about 30 miles. A good estimate of the range you should expect using the different levels of assistance and on variable terrain is 50 miles. The Bosch batteries have an excellent battery management system. The battery can be charged at any time, does not need to be discharged and the charging process can be interrupted without harming the battery. It can also be left for extended periods, for example over the winter, without needing to be recharged.
The battery comes with a 2 amp charger. This will charge the 500Wh battery in 6 hours from flat.
We love this bike because it is relatively light, sporty without being radical and classic in looks. It’s available in either higher or lower crossbar versions as shown in the images.
The gravel tyres have a low rolling resistance, but plenty of multi-surface grip. The bigger volume gives a more comfortable ride and wider contact point.
Other features include Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, 9 speed Shimano Alivio gears, Bosch Purion display and a kick stand.
If you’re looking for a lower weight e-bike, but with off-road versatility and the potential for mudguards, lights and rack – this could be the bike for you.
