Moustache All Rounder
This is the latest update of one of our favourite bikes. The 2 upgrades from the 2020 model are a larger battery and an adjustable handlebar stem.
Moustache are a great, innovative company based in the beautiful Vosges region of France. They have gown rapidly in the nine years since they have been established and are undoubtedly one of the best e bike specialists in the world. (We are quite keen on them!)
Bosch Motor and Electric System
On the Moustache Samedi 27 Xroad 3, the motor is the new Bosch PerformanceLine. This motor is a significant step forward from the previous version and offers the following improvements:
- Weight – now lighter at 3.2 kg
- More powerful – the torque has increased to 65 Newton Metres.
- No resistance – the front chain ring is now a normal size, meaning no gearing in the motor and so no friction.
- Quieter – now one of the quietest motors on the market.
The battery is now the 625 watt hour PowerTube. This is integrated into the downtube but still removable with a key, so that it can be charged on or off the bike. The battery will give a range of about 60+ miles – this is in average conditions using different levels of assistance. Settings available are Eco, Tour, Sport (or eMTB) and Turbo. The assistance level varies from 55% in Eco to 300% in turbo. These levels of assistance are added to the rider’s input and the motor comes in as soon as power is applied to the pedals. The charger supplied with the bike is the 4 amp version that will fully charge the battery in 5.5 hours.
All Purpose Components
The versatility comes from the great combination of the tyres, the light frame, front suspension, integrated mudguards, rack and lights. The tyres are 2.1 inches wide. That’s slightly narrower than standard mountain bike tyres (about 2.35 ins) but nobbly so it will cope well with mud and have a layer of puncture protection.
The bike is comfortable with a nice Selle Royal Wave ergonomic saddle and the suspension forks are enough to take bumps out of the tracks and roads! There is also, for a bit more comfort, a suspension seatpost with 40 mm of travel.
There are good LED lights, front and rear, that run off the battery.
The rack is compatible with child seats and a variety of panniers – but especially with the Ortlieb panniers. The rack has fittings so the Ortlieb panniers can be put on or removed in one simple movement. New for this year the rack is also compatible with MIK fittings. The MIK system enables a number of different bags to click onto the rack in one movement.
New for this year on all the Xroads is an adjustable handlebar stem, so you adjust the handlebar position to exactly where you want it.
What makes the Moustache bikes stand out is the thought that goes into the detail. They start with a clean slate and no pre conceived assumptions. This means that the end product is unique and designed specifically for a purpose with no compromises. The mudguards for example are Moustache’s own innovation, which unlike other mudguards do not move around and are made of aluminium . The slightly swept back handle bars are another Moustache innovation, which is where the name comes from.
We love the Moustache bikes and their versatility, comfort and style. If that appeals to you too, then this could be just the bike for you.
The Moustache bikes come with a 5 year warranty on the frame and 2 years on the electrics.
