Tern’s Updated Amazing Electric Cargo Bike
We’re real fans of the Tern GSD. It’s not an understatement to say that this bike can change lives and the more people that discover that, the better it will be for all of us. GSD stands for ‘Get Stuff Done.’ With this bike you really can dispense with the second family car; or even just dispense with the car completely. Chris takes his twins on his and although they’re now 8 and there’s a bit less passenger leg room than there used to be, they still love to ride on the back. With the new Club Fort (comprising of 4 different Tern GSD accessories), you can now keep your passengers warm and dry. The carrying capacity is amazing and if your cargo if of a quieter, more passive variety, there are many options and accessories to help you get your stuff to where you need it.
There are loads of updates on the new GSD – here are a few: It’s slightly longer at the back, giving more room to fit 2 child seats more easily and to take slightly bigger loads. The motor is the new Cargo Line, there’s a brake light, built-in foot rails, a slacker seat tube angle (better for a range of rider heights) and an excellent centre stand with a remote release lever on the handlebars. Anyone on bumpy roads will also now be grateful for front fork suspension.
The Electric System
The Tern GSD has the Bosch Cargo Line motor. This provides amazing power to get you up that steep hill even with a fully loaded bike. There are 4 levels of assistance and in Turbo the assistance level is a massive 400% with 85Nm of torque.
The battery is the Bosch 500 watt hour. There is a slot on the bike for an additional battery giving a potential total of 1000 watt hours. More than enough to keep you going all day and beyond.
The S00 is belt drive, so no need to worry about lubricating or adjusting the chain (not as easy on the GSD as some bikes). It makes for a smooth, quiet ride and coupled with a continuously variable Enviolo SP hub.
With lots of potential weight, you need good brakes. The GSD has really powerful Magura MT5 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes. Tyres are Schwalbe Big Ben plus on 20 inchTern Altas rims. The wheel size gives the bike quite a low profile and lower centre of gravity – much easier for getting kids on and off and more stable when they are on.
The rack is compatible with the Thule Yepp Maxi Child seats – 2 can be fitted without adapters. The total carrying capacity of the bike is 200 kg.
The seatpost utilises a unique telescopic system, which means the bike can accommodate someone quite small (5′ or so) right upto 6′ 5″.
There’s nothing quite like the GSD. We’d love you to come and see it and try soon.
